Down the track of memories
Dear Friends,
Years back during my house job one of my seniors whispered in my ear;
Ibrahim, ask them to donate blood and then see how many attendents will surround you.
He had seen 6 to 8 attendents of an admitted patient surrounding me while I was compiling the case record in that partially illuminated ward 5 of Govt. SMHS hospital Srinagar Kashmir, the great hospital that stays so close to our hearts.
Unfortunately all my efforts to take out attendents of that patient had dismally failed.
"We need two units of blood for your patient " I finally asked to the group of attendents.
The formula worked very well as apart from his son all attendents flew from the ward as if they were awaiting with their boarding passes near the aircraft and I completed the case record calmly later.
Indeed the blood donation was the most fearful things during those days.
Well friends, if I whisper the same formula to any of the house surgeons struggling in a similar manner now, this formula won't work at all.
The reason is that awareness about blood transfusion has increased . Now strangers donate for unknown people and precious lives are saved all over the world.
The scenario, nevertheless, is different when it comes to organ donations.
For example kidney donations.
During my clinical practice I have observed that people refuse to donate even to their siblings and close relatives.They shy away and provide multiple excuses and go on providing their lip service while calmly watching the down slope of their loved one.
Keeping in view geometric increase in chronic renal failure patients, the renal transplantation requirements have steeped up all over the globe.We need to increase the awareness of Organ donation and help to salvage these patients.
A healthy person can easily donate one kidney to his close relative thus donor and recipient both can live happily after the transplant.
Fears must vanish and Kidney donors in the past must come forward and share their stories and create mass awareness.
Let us increase the awareness of Organ donation and help our loved ones beyond lip service....
